Sexually transmitted infections or STIs affect more than half of Americans in their lifetime. (National Coalition of STD Directors, 2022) It is important to protect yourself from STIs and if left untreated, serious physical consequences may occur.
The most common prevention material is external condoms for males, but there are many other options such as internal condoms and dental dams for females. In addition, it is best practice to wash your hands before any sexual contact.
If an STI is contracted, there are treatment options that can reduce symptoms or cure the infection altogether. It is important to see a physician as soon as possible as the earlier it is diagnosed, the more successful the treatment. It is also important to get tested regularly.
The Women’s Resource Center provides free condoms, latex-free condoms, lubricant packets, and dental dams.
